Australia’s first electric vehicle depot of the future

The Challenge
Heavy transport accounts for around 17% of Australia’s total emissions, with fleet electrification still in its early stages. For logistics operators like Team Global Express (TGE), transitioning to electric vehicles presents both a significant opportunity and a complex operational shift.
KEY CHALLENGES:
Multiple vehicle requirements
TGE’s fleet includes a mix of vehicle types operating simultaneously, each with different charging needs that must be supported within a single solution.
Site constraints
Charging areas are located a significant distance from the main switchboard, increasing infrastructure complexity and installation requirements.
Energy tariff limitations
Time-of-use tariffs make daytime charging costly, requiring a solution that can optimise energy and avoid peak demand charges.
The Solution
JET Charge was involved in various stages of the project, including concept design and planning, charger supply, fit-off commissioning, maintenance and dashboard monitoring.
Underpinning the design was JET Charge’s advanced energy management system, JET Charge CORE, which allowed TGE to use existing electrical infrastructure, without the need for a new high voltage connection.
There were other benefits, too. By using JET Charge CORE, we were able to design a tailored charging system for TGE’s specific fleet mix. We also fed part of the system through a mechanical switchboard: this solved the physical distance issue, and reduced overall installation costs.
TGE needed reliable charging to guarantee business continuity. By selecting best-in-market products, and including a preventative maintenance plan, we designed a system with the right balance of redun- dancy. The site design also included modelling to ensure vehicles could be charged overnight, which helped avoid those peak tariff windows. Ultimately, we were able to deliver the project on scope, on time and on budget.
The pioneering design approach combines both AC and DC charging systems, serving as a model for future projects.

Outcome and Results
The Bungarribee depot is now one of the most advanced electric freight depots in Australia, and a working model for large-scale truck electrification. For TGE, this means:
- Greater confidence that trucks are charged and ready when needed with fast and reliable charging
- Reduced operational risk from downtime
- Infrastructure proven in a high-traffic freight environment
- Lower noise and improved urban air quality for surrounding communities
- Safer, quieter vehicles for drivers
