Model 3 certified for Australia, but which ones are we getting?

We’ve finally got some concrete news about the Model 3 coming to Australia. This week Tesla certified 2 variants with the RVCS. But without more news from Tesla themselves, we’ve had to do some digging to find out exactly which of the overseas offerings Australia will be getting for the launch of the Model 3.

The two vehicles shown to the RVCS (Australia’s vehicle certification system) weigh in at 1726 and 1856 kgs, respectively. Based on UK-model specs, these values suggest we’ll likely only be seeing the Performance AWD and Long Range RWD variants on day one, and will likely miss out on the Standard Range and Standard Range Plus offered elsewhere, including other RH-drive markets like the UK.

If this is true, it has worrying implications for Aussies chasing a bargain. Based on current pricing estimates, both models are at risk of exceeding the luxury car tax threshold. Despite the threshold for inefficient combustion vehicles growing more than $10,000 since 2009, it has remained largely static for efficient options like the Model 3, currently sitting at $75,526.

Exceeding this price would push purchase costs up towards the $90,000 mark and make it difficult for the Model 3 to compete against more affordable options like the Hyundai Ioniq & Kona or the Kia e-Niro.

It’s important to remember that any assumptions made today are subject to change. Tesla are likely to update their site with specific availabilities and pricing in the coming weeks, with a nationwide release expected to follow later in the year.

What is confirmed, however, is that both variants are rated for towing up to 910 kgs for braked and 750 kg for unbraked trailers. That’s not quite enough to satisfy a tradie or caravanner, but more than enough for the average weekend trailer load.
