What is the DRIVEN Program?

The DRIVEN Program is designed to help the Australian automotive sector sell, service, and repair more EVs. With $60 million in funding over four years, the program supports the purchase and installation of EV charging infrastructure for dealerships and EV repairers nationwide.

DRIVEN Charger Rebate Stream

The DRIVEN Charger Rebate Stream provides $40 million in rebates to the automotive industry for installing smart EV charging infrastructure. By equipping dealerships and repair shops with this technology, the program supports Australia’s transition to EVs and contributes to the national net-zero emissions target.

The closing date is 30th April each financial year for the program’s duration or earlier if funding is fully allocated.

Coverage Details
Rebate Amounts$2,000 per installed 7 kW AC plug.
$2,500 per installed 11-22 kW AC plug.
$2,500 per installed DC plug (up to 50 kW).
Maximum Rebate$20,000 per site.

Applications are limited to one per site and processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Grant Eligibility Criteria for Car Dealerships

You Can Apply If You:


  • have an Australian business number (ABN)
  • have an account with an Australian financial institution
  • are an entity, incorporated in Australia.

You Must Also Be:


  • a licenced motor dealer/trader
  • a service centre associated with a licensed motor dealer/trader
  • an automotive repair business, compliant with Australian Standards 5732:202 2 (EV operations – maintenance and repair) employing at least one EV-qualified technician.

You Cannot Apply If You Are:


  • any organisation not included in listed eligible entities
  • a business operating out of residential premises

Purchase & Install Eligible EV Chargers

Requirements:

To be eligible for a rebate, you must have purchased and installed (by a licensed electrician) at least one eligible smart EV charger(s) at an eligible site on or after 26 March 2024.

Eligible Smart Chargers Include:

  • AC plugs with 7 kW charging speed (single phase)
  • AC plugs with 11-22 kW charging speed
  • DC plugs with 50 kW or less charging speed.

Application close date: 30 April 2025, each financial year, until 2028.

Eligible Expenditure

To qualify, your project must have a minimum expenditure of $2,000.

Reimbursement will only cover the value of your eligible expenses incurred.

You can include any combination of plugs within a single application, but the maximum rebate per eligible dealership or repairer site is capped at $20,000.

Please note: Only one application per eligible site is allowed under the DRIVEN Charger Rebate stream, even if the maximum rebate has not been claimed.

Is there a limit to the number of plugs/chargers I can apply for?


The rebate is capped at $20,000 per eligible site. You can include as many plugs as you want within this cap. However, only one application can be submitted per eligible site.

What rebate amount can I claim if I run showrooms for multiple automotive manufacturers at the same eligible site?


You can claim up to $20,000 for each automotive manufacturer you represent at the eligible site. A separate application must be submitted for each franchise agreement associated with your showroom.

Does the $20,000 site cap apply if my eligible site has both a dealership rooftop and a service centre?


No, sites with both a dealership rooftop and a service centre are eligible for $20,000 per operation, making the total site cap $40,000. Separate applications must be submitted for each operation.

Are there restrictions on where EV chargers can be placed at the eligible site?


No, there are no restrictions on charger placement within the eligible site. However, chargers installed outside the eligible site do not qualify for the rebate.


Do the chargers need to be publicly accessible to qualify for the rebate?

No, the chargers can be for private or public use.


Can I apply for multiple eligible sites in a single application?


No, you must submit a separate application for each eligible site.

Can I submit more than one application for the same site to reach the $20,000 cap?


No, only one successful application is allowed per eligible site, unless the site includes showrooms operating under multiple franchise agreements or both a showroom and a service centre.

Do I need to provide evidence of costs related to installing EV chargers?


Yes, you must provide proof of the direct costs for purchasing and installing eligible EV smart chargers. These costs must have been incurred on or after March 26, 2024. Refer to Section 6.1 of the grant opportunity guidelines for more details.

Do I need to sell or service passenger vehicles to qualify?


Yes, this program is intended to support dealerships and EV repairers of passenger and light commercial vehicles.

If I operate under a dealer agreement with a vehicle manufacturer, who should apply for the rebate?


Only dealers are eligible to apply for the rebate, not the vehicle manufacturers.
